‘Timing’: My Reflections on Writing a Novel with Uncanny Timing in Relation to Real World Events

Anyone who has read Undercard will know that it deals with a number of issues that have recently become front and centre in the world, and especially in the United States. The fact that the book was released in the US right when major protests were occurring was a very strange experience for me to go through – and this was not the first strange experience of real world events being incredibly similar to scenes I had already written in this novel. My friend Elena Taylor, who generously gave me a blurb for Undercard’s US release, provided me with the opportunity to write a guest blog for her site, and I chose to write about the unusual experiences and feelings I had at the time: “I’m not a believer in fate, even if it does feel like there is something connecting this book, my life, and the entire world. I have been writing about the need for greater equality in the world since the 2000s, and I believe that it is only a coincidence that it took this long for my writing ability to develop enough to be published in this time.” I’m very happy with the piece, both in how it turned out and in the way writing it released and articulated a lot that was on my mind.
